Weed Whipper Tired of Poor Line Feed

I know that I can't be the only one who gets sick and tired of constantly having to spool new trimmer line. Going through the process of refilling the trimmer's spool every 5 minutes can be such a pain and can get to be costly too. It seems like I could get all of my yard cleanup and trimming done in about half as much time if I could figure out where to get my hands on some invincible trimmer line. But, does an unbreakable trimmer line really exist? And what does the strongest trimmer line do differently than the others?

Unbreakable Trimmer Line - Does It Exist

Does Unbreakable Trimmer Line Actually Exist?

Unfortunately, there is no such thing as unbreakable weed trimmer line. But, one thing that a lot of people don't know is that some trimmer lines are much more durable than others. To find the best line for your string trimmer, you should check out the different types of heavy-duty trimmer line, and also consider why your line keeps breaking.

Why Your Trimmer Line Could Be Breaking Frequently

If you're trying to clean up the edges of your yard but your trimmer line keeps breaking, the main culprit is low-quality trimmer line. What I mean by low quality is not only cheap, off-brand line, but also line that has been sitting in your garage or shed for too long.

The other important reasons why your trimmer line could be underperforming are: using the wrong type of line, and using your trimmer the wrong way. You can buy trimmer line in all kinds of thicknesses, and as you can imagine, thinner lines tend to break more easily. This is especially true for people that do a lot of trimming around hard surfaces. If you think that you have discovered an unbreakable trimmer line, and you constantly beat it against pavers and cement, you're going to quickly realize that you might be to blame for the frequent breaks.

The Strongest Types of Trimmer Line

When it comes to the hunt for the closest thing to an unbreakable string trimmer line, there are a couple of characteristics that you'll want to look for. Although not every trimmer is compatible with really heavy-duty line, trimmer lines that are new, thick, and twisted typically outperform the others.

Thick Line (0.95" and above)

As you might have already guessed, thick trimmer lines can handle a lot more abuse than thinner ones. If you want to talk about the most unbreakable trimmer line, you've got to look at lines that are 0.95 inches or greater in diameter/thickness. One guy I talked to said he was able to trim 5 large yards without changing the spool of his 0.95 inch line.

However, if you want to pick up some even thicker line for your trimmer, be sure to check that your trimmer can handle it. Most trimmers are only made to handle line up to 0.95 inches thick. If you try to put in line that is thicker than the manufacturer's rating, it won't fit properly and your trimmer won't run as it should.

Twisted Line

After doing a little bit of digging, it has become pretty clear that the shape of your trimmer line really matters when it comes to its durability. The consensus I've reached is that twisted trimmer line is the closest to unbreakable that you can find. In some cases, I've heard of twisted line lasting almost twice as long as the average round line.

Part of the reason for this is that twisted line holds up really well against concrete and tree trunks. Because it has a more reinforced shape and is more aerodynamic, it won't break as easily. While there are differently shaped lines that may leave a cleaner cut on each blade of grass, they usually aren't as strong.

New Line

Replacing your trimmer line regularly, and keeping the line out of the sun as much as possible are two of the best ways you can lengthen the life of each spool. Cold weather in the winter and hot weather in the summer will wear out your line very quickly. If you want to make your trimmer line last as long as possible, be sure you're using relatively new line. A very helpful rule of thumb is to get a new spool of trimmer line once a season.

The Closest to Unbreakable Trimmer Line You'll Get

Finally, after figuring out what all the characteristics of nearly unbreakable trimmer line are, I've found a few of the best available. These three trimmer lines are all able to withstand a pretty impressive amount of punishment without giving in.

Husqvarna Titanium Force (0.95 Inch)

First up we have this very well-reviewed trimmer line from Husqvarna. Although the .130 inch options are likely a bit tougher than this .95 inch one, not all trimmers can fit line thicker than 0.95 inches. If you've got a yard with plenty of tough weeds and hard obstacles, and you're tired of re-spooling line every few minutes, this is a great choice. With proper use, you can make this line last quite a while. As an added benefit, this line is the least expensive of the three.

Maxpower 338816 (.130 Inch)

Whoever designed this product at Maxpower must've been as sick of their line breaking as we are. Luckily, their design worked out great. This 0.130 inch trimmer line can nearly slice through small trees. Plus, in a few side-by-side comparisons with similar products, this line has proven to last the longest. Economical and highly rated, you won't be disappointed with this line if you can fit it in your trimmer.

LoNoiz Spiral Twist (.130 Inch)

Lastly, we've got a sleek, commercial option from LoNoiz. If you do a ton of trimming or happen to run a lawn care business, this is a great bulk option. People rave about this line being the strongest around and are really impressed with how far they can go with one spool. But if you're only dealing with a small or medium-sized lawn, this might be overkill. Since it's a good idea to buy new line each season, don't get a 3-pound spool unless you'll use it all.
